Wood vs Polywood Shutters in Arizona

Compare wood vs polywood plantation shutters for Arizona heat, UV, moisture, insulation R-value, cost, and which rooms need which material.

Choosing plantation shutters in the Valley is not the same as choosing them in a humid coastal climate. Phoenix summers push window treatments harder than almost anywhere else in the U.S. Here is a practical comparison from a local manufacturer.

Hardwood plantation shutters

Classic hardwood (we use premium North American basswood) delivers warm grain, stain options, and a furniture-grade look. Natural wood provides solid insulation (about R-2.8) and pairs beautifully with formal living rooms, studies, and shaded elevations.

Wood is not ideal for constantly wet environments. Avoid poorly sealed wood in steam showers or as the only barrier on brutal, unshaded west glass unless you accept more finish maintenance over a decade-plus.

Thermal polywood / composite shutters

Polywood-style composites are engineered polymers, often with aluminum reinforcement. They will not warp, peel, or yellow under intense Arizona UV the way cheap vinyl can. Insulation is stronger (about R-6.0 on our thermal line), and they are fully waterproof — perfect for kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, and sun-baked exposures.

Quick decision guide

  • West / south glass, high sun: thermal polywood
  • Wet rooms: polywood only
  • Formal interiors, wood trim match: hardwood stains
  • Budget on large new builds: polywood often wins on value + warranty

Many Phoenix homes mix both: hardwood in living areas, polywood on the sunny wing. See full specs on our products page or book a free measure.
